Wat Chayamangkalaram (Sleeping Buddha Temple) of Penang, Malaysia

After we left Snake Temple, our next stop was Wat Chayamangkalaram (better known as the Sleeping Buddha Temple) in Lorong Burmah.

This beautiful gold plated reclining Buddha of the Wat Chayamangkalaram (Thai Buddhist Temple) in Penang is said to be the 3rd largest of its kind, it is 33 meters in length. The temple was officially given its 5-acres site by Queen Vitoria in 1985. The first monk was a Theravada Buddhist monk from Thailand, Phorthan Kuat, also known as the "Powerful Monk". According to the legend the monk was very fond of "Asam Laksa", a Penang specialty and even today devotees bring a bowl of Asam Laksa as an offering to his shrine.

Behind the Reclining Buddha Statue are niches with urns containing ashes of devotees.

Unfortunately, we did not try the Thai Coconut Ice Cream located within the compound of  the Wat Chayamangkalaram. I will be coming back again to try the Coconut Ice Cream.

Our next destination is Burmese Buddhist Temple that just opposite of Wat Chayamangkalaram.
